Operation arrests 15 suspects involved in attacks on RN

Fifteen suspected of leading or participating in attacks on public and private property in Rio Grande do Norte were arrested during Operation Sentinela, carried out by a joint public security force. The arrests took place on Wednesday (22) and were announced later this Thursday (23) afternoon.

In all, 13 arrest warrants and 26 search and seizure warrants were carried out in the cities of Natal, Parnamirim, São Gonçalo do Amarante, Macaíba, Canguaretama, Bom Jesus, Santo Antônio, Caiçara do Norte, Acari and Macau. Two other people were arrested red-handed and there are still five outstanding warrants.

According to information from the Ministry of Justice, most of the prisoners already have convictions for involvement in a criminal organization, drug trafficking, robberies and homicides. Some of them were serving their sentence in a semi-open regime, using electronic anklets that were allegedly violated before and during the attacks registered in Natal.

Santiago Hounie, delegate of the Federal Police in Rio Grande do Norte, said that work continues on “identifying those responsible for leading the attacks that started last week in the state”.

The State Public Prosecutor’s Office participated in the operation with the support of the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the National Force and the State Department of Penitentiary Administration.

As of this Friday morning (24), 182 suspects of participation in more than 300 attacks have already been arrested and 42 firearms, 148 explosive devices and 33 gallons of fuel, among others, have been apprehended. The attacks began on the 13th as a reprisal by criminal factions for police operations against drug trafficking and the restricted regime in state penitentiaries.

Football games will resume this Friday (24)

In meetings held this Thursday afternoon (23) between representatives of the State Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (SESED) and the Norteriograndense Football Federation (FNF), it was decided to return the public to regional championship games from this Friday (24).

Among the determinations for the return of the public is the presence of a single crowd in the stadiums and adequacy of schedules, during the afternoon and with only one match per day. The first will be this Friday (24th), at 3 pm, at Arena das Dunas, between America and Santa Cruz de Natal for the Potiguar Championship.

On Sunday (26), at 3:30 pm, teams ABC and Náutico will take the field for the Copa do Nordeste, at Estádio Frasqueirao. And, on Monday (27), at 3 pm, the Campeonato Potiguar will have the match between Santa Cruz de Natal and Potiguar de Mossoró at 3 pm at Estádio Barrettão.

Report points to mistreatment of prisoners in the penitentiary system

The National Mechanism for the Prevention and Combat of Torture (MNPCT), linked to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, released this Wednesday (22) the final report on the situation of the prison system in Rio Grande do Norte. “The document brings 138 recommendations to the competent authorities, from different powers and levels of the Republic, and reveals the existence of various forms of mistreatment and physical and psychological torture, in addition to pointing out vulnerabilities that point to violations of the rights of persons deprived of liberty. ”, said the folder in a note.

In releasing the report, the board condemned recent attacks by criminals across the state. “The MNPCT registers its repudiation of all manifestations and actions referring to the practice of violence and deaths. We express our solidarity and regret to the entire population of North Rio Grande who has been experiencing a wave of violence that has resulted in fatalities”, completes the note.
