Only three survivors of the Ninho do Urubu tragedy remain in Flamengo; know who they are

On February 8, 2019, a fire in Flamengo base accommodation killed ten boys and 16 managed to survive. Of these, only three remain at the club: goalkeeper Dyogo Alves, defensive midfielder Rayan Lucas (both played in this year’s Cup) and defender Jhonata Ventura. All are in the Under-20 category.

In 2021, Flamengo signed a contract with 18-year-old Dyogo from Ceará until 2024, with a termination fine for clubs abroad of 40 million euros. The goalkeeper, who was Flamengo’s starter in winning the Copa do Brasil under-17 and champion of the Brazilian Championship under-17, was also listed in Carioca games.

The goalkeeper, who got a tattoo with the date of the tragedy and the “Garotos do Ninho” phase and was called up to the Brazilian under-15 team in the same year as the tragedy, even completed training for the main team commanded by Tite at Granja Comary in March. Between under-20 and under-17, he played 39 matches in the last two years, 30 of them still for the lower category in 2021, with just one as a substitute.

Also in 2021, 16-year-old Ryan Lucas signed his first professional contract. He had just turned 16, the minimum age required in the country for this type of contract. As in the case of Dyogo, in his contract there is a termination fine for clubs abroad stipulated at 50 million euros.

Rayan arrived at Flamengo in 2016, aged just 11. He even joined the under-17 squad, despite being 15 years old and scored a goal in the Brazilian Championship of the category. In total, with the under-17s, he played 41 times, 26 as a starter, most of them in 2022, and scored two goals.

Jhonata Ventura, 19, also remains at the club. The bond with Flamengo was signed in 2020 and runs until September 2023.

He was the last player to return to the pitch. That’s because Jhonata had 35% of his body burned in the tragedy. Therefore, he was only able to play again in the middle of 2021, after 2 and a half years without playing a football game.
