New York – Governor Wilson Lima highlighted advances made by the Government of Amazonas to bring drinking water to the most isolated communities and cities in the State, during the opening of the United Nations (UN) Conference on Water. The event began on Wednesday (22), the date on which World Water Day is celebrated, and continued until Friday (24) in New York, in the United States.

“The state of Amazonas is here to listen, to learn and also to share what we have built in the state to preserve these water sources and also guarantee access to drinking water, especially to isolated communities”,

summed up the governor.

Wilson Lima is the only head of State Executive who is part of the Brazilian delegation at the UN conference and is accompanied by the head of the Secretary of State for the Environment (Sema), Eduardo Taveira; the president of the Amazonas Sanitation Company (Cosama), Armando do Valle; and the chief secretary of the Civil House, Flávio Antony Filho.

At least 12 heads of state and government, 80 ministers and senior government officials, as well as more than 6,500 civil society representatives are taking part in the meeting, which aims to make countries aware of the global water crisis facing the planet and obtain commitments from governments, institutions and communities to achieve international goals, such as those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In addition to opening the conference, the governor also participated in a meeting called Interactive Dialogue, with the theme Water for Health: access to WASH, including the Human Rights to drink safe drinking water and sanitation, in addition to other agendas throughout the program, such as thematic panels and meetings with institutions and international organizations in search of partnerships.

“Our coming here is important to strengthen the relationship with organizations that deal with this water issue and that also provide technological and financial support. We have some important partnerships with Unicef, the National Water Agency and other institutions. So, this is an important moment to hold these parallel meetings and these understandings so that we can build ways so that we can have support from these institutions”,

explained the governor of Amazonas.

Amazon stocks

In Amazonas, one of the State projects presented by Governor Wilson Lima is the “Água Boa” and Salta Z projects, coordinated and executed by Cosama and Civil Defense, which has already brought drinking water to the interior of more than 130,000 Amazonians in 50 municipalities, with an investment of R$ 13.5 million.

Among other advances are the partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the National Water Agency (ANA), in addition to the preparation of the State Water Resources Plan, and the creation of the first Basin Plan, guiding the management of the Tarumã-Açu Watershed, in the capital of Amazonas.

“There is also a lot of talk, and today this was the main point, in debating the issue of water and climate change, especially because climate change first impacts poorer populations such as riverside people, indigenous people, populations in the interior. So, programming public policies, financial resources, to bring good water to the communities is the great goal and objective that the governor has been leading here in the UN agenda”, evaluated the secretary of Sema, Eduardo Taveira.

global alert

During the opening of the UN Conference on Water – the first specific one on the subject in almost 50 years – the organization’s secretary general, António Guterres, warned that humanity is “vampirizing” the planet’s water resources “drop by drop”. Over the past 40 years, freshwater consumption has increased by about 1% per year.

“We are draining humanity’s lifeblood through vampiric overconsumption and unsustainable use, and evaporating water with global warming,” said Guterres, denouncing that humanity “broken the water cycle, destroyed ecosystems and polluted the waters. subterranean”. “Humanity is heading, blindly, down a dangerous path”, he highlighted.

The United Nations also warns that access to clean water and sanitation must be a priority for governments by 2030 and that at least 2 billion people live without access to drinking water and more than 3.5 billion lack basic sanitation. .
