Businessman Flavio Rocha, owner of Riachuelo, praises the attitude of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government in proposing the end of the import tax exemption of up to US$ 50 for shipments from individuals to individuals. The measure affects consumers of virtual stores such as Shein, Shopee and AliExpress, which are very popular among Brazilians.
Rocha, who in recent years has been politically close to Jair Bolsonaro (PL), says that “the measure [tomada pela Receita] moves in this direction, to bring the necessary competitive equity.”
The businessman claims that Brazilian businessmen do not want to deprive people of buying cheaper products, but that “there must be equality of conditions”.
“The good functioning of the free market is essential to preserve the interest of the consumer, and for that it is necessary to have equality of conditions. The Brazilian product has a tax burden and the reason for having an import tax is to match the cost for the producer Brazilian with that of imported products”, states Rocha.
The federal government announced this week the end of the import tax exemption of up to US$ 50 for international shipments from individuals to individuals. The purpose of the measure was to combat the so-called “digital smuggling”, which can generate up to US$ 8 billion in revenue for public coffers.
The measure, however, was not initially well explained by the government, which ended up accused of promoting a new taxation.
According to the Federal Revenue, the rules no longer allow exemption for purchases of products from companies and, therefore, what is being sought is the effective payment of the due tax.
