On their return to the elite of Brazilian football, Grêmio defeated Santos by 1-0, at the Alfredo Jaconi stadium, in Caxias do Sul, for the first round of the Brazilian Series A Championship. The goal for Tricolor was scored by João Pedro.
With the Alfredo Jaconi stadium full, the first half of the match was busy, with Renato Portaluppi’s team looking for victory. At 2 minutes, Diogo Barbosa started on the left side and played in the middle for Zinho. He tapped and the ball went close to the goal. At 10 minutes, João Pedro supported the right side and played for Cristaldo. The Argentine dominated the ball in the middle and hit it well, but João Paulo stretched out and spread it out for a corner.
In the 34th minute, Bittello, one of the highlights of the match, risked a powerful shot from outside the area, which goalkeeper João Paulo saved. At 36 minutes, Tricolor had a chance to open the scoring with a free kick by Bitello. The beat, however, went over the Santos goal.
From so much pressure, Grêmio opened the scoring. In the 43rd minute, as Grêmio arrived on the left, Diogo Barbosa made the cross and defender Eduardo Bauermann cut it with a header. On the rebound, the ball fell to right-back João Pedro, who hit with his left foot and opened the scoring.
In the second half, Grêmio came back putting pressure on the Santos team. At 6 minutes, the referee was called to review the move by Messias on Cristaldo, inside the area. After review by VAR, Wilton Pereira Sampaio scored the penalty. In the penalty kick, Luis Suárez mishandled the ball and isolated it.
After the missed penalty, the atmosphere of the game changed and Santos started to put pressure on Renato Portaluppi’s team. The Vila Belmiro team created opportunities with Ângelo, Soteldo and Marcos Leonardo.
In the 31st minute, Diogo Barbosa made an individual play on the left. He crossed and the ball went to Nathan, who dominated at the edge of the area and hit the ball. The ball passed very close to the goal defended by João Paulo. In the 37th minute, Zinho made the tackle on the left end of the attack, entered the area and put the ball in for João Paulo’s defense.
In the 40th minute, Soteldo was expelled after a violent foul on Thomas Luciano. Even so, Peixe put on some final pressure, looking for a draw. Tricolor, however, avoided greater dangers and secured the first three points in the Brasileirão. In the second round of the Brazilian Championship, Grêmio will face Cruzeiro next Saturday (22), at 9 pm, at the Mineirão stadium.
