The pact aims to strengthen the institutional relationship and cooperation to improve the management of water resources in the state

Manaus (AM) – On World Environment Day, celebrated today (5), Governor Wilson Lima signed the term of adhesion of Amazonas to the Pact for Water Governance, together with the deputy director-president of the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA), Ana Carolina Argolo Nascimento de Castro.

At the ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the Government of Amazonas, Wilson Lima also officially launched the fourth phase of the Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Burning (PPCDQ-AM), which provides for a set of integrated actions for the two-year period from 2023 to 2025.

The new package of measures announced by Wilson Lima aims to expand investments in the UCs, reinforce environmental management, water resources and basic sanitation in the state, in addition to reducing deforestation and burning rates in Amazonas.

“I grew up listening to the story that the world was interested in the Amazon, interested in preserving the Amazon, that it had money for the Amazon, but the problems remain today, mainly with the lack of drinking water. And what a contradiction we live in because we have the largest hydrographic basin on the planet here and still suffer a lot from the lack of water. And we have a very large window of opportunities in which the world turns its attention to the Amazon”,

highlighted Governor Wilson Lima.

Also participating in the ceremony were the deputy director of ANA, Luis André Muniz; the Superintendent of Support to the National Water Resources Management System (Singreh) and to the Subnational Agencies for Regulation of Basic Sanitation, Humberto Cardoso Gonçalves; in addition to state secretaries, such as the Secretary for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, and the CEO of the Sanitation Company of Amazonas (Cosama), Armando do Vale.

“The 5th of June is very important because we can now, on the part of the Secretary of State for the Environment, implement this determination that the governor has expressed since the beginning of his term. I want to highlight here first the Water Pact that the governor has now signed with the National Water Agency. The State implements, through the Environment Secretariat, the Water Resources policy”,

highlighted Taveira.

Pact for Water Governance

The pact signed by the Government of Amazonas with ANA aims to strengthen the institutional relationship and cooperation to improve the management of water resources in the state.

With the pact, the State undertakes to regulate basic sanitation services, through the Sanitation Company of Amazonas (Cosama) and the State Secretariat for Urban Development, in addition to implementing dam safety policies, through the Defense Amazon civilian.

“The State of Amazonas is a huge, complex, rich, beautiful state, a source of pride for our country and I feel very happy to see the efforts that the State has made in managing its water resources and ANA is at the State’s disposal to that this management is done correctly”,

said Ana Carolina Argolo.

The goal is also to strengthen the planning and follow-up of actions developed through a partnership between the State and ANA. Currently, the Agency carries out, together with Sema, the National Program for Strengthening River Basin Committees (Procomitês), the Program for Stimulating the Disclosure of Water Quality Data (Qualiágua) and the Program for consolidating the National Pact for Water Management Waters (Progestion).

On the occasion, the governor delivered the Escola da Floresta project to ANA, with its first unit already under construction in the municipality of São Sebastião do Uatumã (247 kilometers from Manaus). Wilson Lima received the Akauana publication from the Agency, educational content about water that will be incorporated into school education, according to the governor, especially at Escola da Floresta, where students will have access to educational videos on water use and hydrological monitoring.
