After returning on Wednesday (11) and having the official opening parade, Oktoberfest was once again suspended in Blumenau (SC) this Thursday (12), in a preventive manner, according to the official statement. The expectation is that the biggest beer event in the country will return on Friday (13).

This time, there was no need to dismantle equipment and only the gates of Parque Vila Germânica will be closed. “The decision was taken to prevent visitors from having difficulties returning home or to their accommodation, as there may be flooding points throughout the city,” said the city hall in a statement on its official website.

The reason is the same that had already caused the suspension of the party between Friday (6) and Tuesday (10): the heavy rains that punished the entire Itajaí Valley and raised the level of the Itajaí-Açu river, leaving several cities in the region collapsed. and homeless families.

The river that runs through Blumenau is expected to reach 11 meters in the city. Also on Saturday (7), Mayor Mário Hildebrandt (Podemos) declared a state of emergency. On Monday (9), classes had been suspended in Blumenau.

The rains that have fallen in the state since the beginning of the month have caused damage in more than 130 cities, according to a survey by the state Civil Defense. Rio do Sul, also in the Itajaí Valley, had flooding in many areas, with water invading several areas of the city, leaving houses completely covered.

The mayor of Taió, Alexandre Purnhagen (MDB), had already complained in a phone call to the state Civil Defense Monitoring and Alerts coordinator, Frederico Rudorff, calling for the dams to be gradually opened. “The people here are at their limit. We need to empty the dam. Blumenau doesn’t need to have dry shoes. We have water on our heads. It’s going to be a tragedy. People are going to die because of the party”, said the mayor.

A group of around 300 city residents who were left homeless were transferred to the neighboring municipality of Pouso Redondo, 20 km away.

The biggest Oktoberfest in the country, the party in Blumenau started on Wednesday (4) already reflecting the problems of days of intense rain in the region. The traditional parade in the streets was canceled and the audience at night was just 13,600 people, well below the 29,000 people at the opening in 2022, the first event of its kind in the city after the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Thursday (5), the party took place again, but the predicted amount of rain for the following days made the city hall decide to suspend the event for five days, between the 6th and 10th of October. Because of this, the event gained an extra week at Parque Vila Germânica and was extended until October 29th. The return of Oktoberfest on Wednesday (11) even brought the official parade. But the incessant rains brought a new suspension.

Anyone who purchased tickets for this Thursday can use them the next day or request a full refund through the event’s official channels.
