“Curitiba has always flirted with Oktoberfest, but we never had something that really represented the full importance of the event that became one of the main German flags around the world. After a lot of work and bringing together some of the main companies in the entertainment market in Paraná, we managed to come up with a party model for Curitiba residents and tourists”, explains Patrik Cornelsen, director of Planeta Brasil, one of the event’s producers.

We are very happy and excited with the result and are already preparing for the next edition, which will be held in 2024. The event featured traditional costume parades, election of royalty, presentations and a program full of entertainment. For Caio Antunes, 27 years old, the entertainment, the batting competition and the experience of tasting typical foods were the main points that made him enjoy the party. He made a point of trying two typical dishes, currywurst, a portion of red and white German sausage with homemade curry sauce and fries, and Eisbein, a traditional pork knuckle. “This is the first time I have visited an Oktoberfest. I had never eaten pork knuckle and I tried the one from Bierwit because I thought it was different, it comes with apple puree. I was surprised by the combination and I really liked it,” he says.

Fabrício Santos, 31 years old, also present at the event, was happy to have participated in the first edition. “It was possible to immerse yourself in German culture and experience the flavors of the cuisine to the sound of the country’s good old traditional music. I’m already looking forward to the next editions and to spreading the event more and more each year, so that it becomes a fixture in the city’s annual calendar.”

According to Giovanna Smaka, chef and co-owner of the Bierwit restaurant, for a first event, Oktoberfest Curitiba was very positive. “Friday and Saturday were quite busy, Sunday was a little weaker and Thursday I believe the rain got in the way a little. This is the first event, so I believe we still have things to improve for the next few years in general, but it was really cool. The public came back to comment on the dish. On Friday night, everyone was dancing and enjoying themselves, it was really fun. We were very happy to participate in the first edition and we hope to participate in the next ones”, she says.

The Curitiba event was endorsed by the second largest Oktoberfest in Brazil, held in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), which in 2022 brought together almost 700 thousand people. In addition to the participation of the Association of Microbreweries of the State of Paraná (Procerva), which was responsible for curating the more than 15 participating craft breweries.
