Nunes’ environment sees little chance for Bolsonaro’s colonel – 02/02/2024 – Panel

The appointment of retired colonel of the Military Police of São Paulo Ricardo Mello Araújo to vice-president of Ricardo Nunes (MDB) by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was received with reticence and skepticism by party leaders who make up the allied base of the mayor of São Paulo. São Paulo.

For them, the definitive name will only appear in June, after negotiation with all the acronyms, and by then Araújo’s name should become unviable due to different factors, the allies assess.

In the root PL, formed by historical and non-Bolsonaro leaders of the party, the colonel is considered a name that is difficult for the electorate to accept due to his stance of radical support for the former president and the controversies in which he was involved as commander of Rota and president from Ceagesp. This group defends the name of delegate Raquel Gallinati, as revealed by the Panel.

Substitute for state deputy, she was an alternative already thought of to also please the Bolsonarist wing of the party, as she is part of the security forces and is a supporter of the former president.

In the PL’s Bolsonarist base, support is for Mello, but also with skepticism. The group sees a strategy by Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the party, to wear down Mello Araújo by exposing his name widely with eight months to go until the election. In political jargon, the colonel would be “fried” through public exposure to make room for an alternative, which could be Raquel Gallinati herself.

Nunes will commission a survey with the names of Araújo, Gallinati, Tomé Abduch (state deputy of the Republicans-SP) and Sonaira Fernandes (state secretary of Policies for Women of the Republicans-SP).

In the Emedebista support bloc, however, the assessment is that the Republican names have little chance of succeeding, given that the PL, as the largest party in the alliance, would have priority in choosing the vice president.
