Striker Neymar, who had been having a great match against Lille with a goal and an assist, injured his right ankle, the same one he injured in the World Cup in Qatar, and had to be replaced. The Brazilian left the field crying and gave way to Frenchman Hugo Ekitike.
The injury happened after a move in which André, from Lille, arrived to mark Neymar, who ended up spraining his ankle due to the rival’s load from behind. The bid wasn’t hard, so much so that the opposing athlete didn’t get a yellow card.
Neymar will undergo further tests to find out the seriousness of the problem. With the injury, the Brazilian becomes one more concern for coach Christophe Galtier in the clash against Bayern Munich, in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The second leg is scheduled for March 8, at the Allianz Arena.
At the World Cup in Qatar, Neymar suffered a sprained ankle, after a fight with the Serbian side Milenkovic in the 22nd minute of the second half, and was substituted shortly afterwards, showing a lot of discomfort.

What is an ankle sprain?
A sprain, or ankle sprain, is an injury that occurs when there is “a lateral movement of the foot at an intensity beyond normal”, according to the definition of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT). The injury is classified into three levels of severity, according to the SBOT guidelines: grade 1, when there is ligament strain; grade 2, when there is a partial ligament injury; and grade 3, when there is total ligament injury.
Orthopedists also guide the performance of complementary exams, in certain cases, to investigate possible fractures associated with torsion. X-rays are usually taken when there is pain “at specific bony points” or in cases of “impossibility of walking (at least four steps)”, according to the SBOT.
Neymar suffered injury in 2019
In 2019, Neymar missed the Copa América held in Brazil after suffering an ankle sprain in a friendly against Qatar before the competition. At the time, tests detected a torn ligament in Neymar’s right ankle, the same one that was affected by the clash with the Serbia defender in the opening match of the World Cup.
To ensure recovery, Neymar had to immobilize the region near his right ankle at the time, and used crutches to avoid putting weight on his foot.
In 2018, Neymar was also injured
The number 10 of the Brazilian national team also left the debut of the 2018 World Cup, in Russia, with discomfort in his right ankle, after suffering repeated fouls in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland. At the time, Neymar limped after the match and manifested pain in the area in the following training sessions, but he acted normally in all of Brazil’s remaining matches in that World Cup.
According to SBOT guidelines, made available by the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB), mild lesions may improve symptoms in one or two weeks. The Brazilian team returns to the field in the Qatar Cup next Monday, against Switzerland, and ends its participation in the group stage against Cameroon, on Friday of next week, December 2nd.
