the attacking midfielder jolintonof newcastle, was fined £29,000 (about R$183,000) and had his driving license suspended for a year for driving under the influence of alcohol in England earlier this month. The punishments for the Brazilian player were announced this week by the local court.
The 26-year-old athlete, who has been standing out for the English team this season, failed a breathalyzer test in a police checkpoint held on January 12 in the city of Newcastle. On Wednesday, Judge Paul Currer ruled to suspend his driving license for one year. The punishment can be reduced to nine months if the player takes a rehabilitation course.
The amount of the fine was calculated by the judge based on his salary. According to documents filed with the court, Joelinton earns £43,000 a week (R$271,000), equivalent to just over R$1 million a month. The player will still have to disburse a fee of 2,000 pounds (R$ 12,000).
The judge claimed that the punishments applied in the case are due to the attitude of the Brazilian, who admitted to consuming alcohol and collaborated with the investigation of the case.
“You put yourself in real danger and that could have disastrous consequences for the lives of others. I sincerely hope that you have learned from this mistake and that we don’t see you in this courtroom again,” Currer said.
