New record: Earth has hottest week ever recorded – 07/07/2023 – Environment

With the average global temperature at 17.23°C, this Thursday (6) broke a new heat record. The index was broken for the third time this week, making it the hottest on record. The number was 1.02°C above the historical pattern for July 6th.

On Monday (3), the world temperature was 17.01°C, surpassing the highest index recorded by scientists so far, of 16.92°C, in 2016 (which was repeated in 2022). The record was broken the following day, when 17.18°C were reached, a temperature that was maintained on Wednesday (5).

The daily temperature data are from the National Center for Environmental Prediction of the United States, linked to the Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), preliminary analyzed by the University of Maine and published in the tool Climate Reanalyzer.

NOAA is one of the largest climate monitoring authorities and, to the AP news agency, said it cannot recognize the daily surveys because it only does longer, monthly or annual analyses.

“We recognize that we are in a warm period due to climate change, and combined with El Niño and warm summer conditions, we are seeing record warm surface temperatures being recorded in many locations around the world,” the institution told the AP.

The daily records come after a sequence of extreme heat marks being overcome. May had the highest recorded ocean temperatures for the month, while in June sea and air temperature records were broken “by a substantial margin”.

In Antarctica, even in the middle of winter in the southern hemisphere, sea ice reached its lowest extent for June since the beginning of satellite observations, being 17% below average.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in a speech on Thursday (6) that recent statistics show that “climate change is out of control”.

He said greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, even if more ambitious climate targets are needed. “If we insist on postponing the key measures that are needed, I think we are heading for a catastrophic situation, as the last two temperature records demonstrate,” he said.
