Judge Eduardo Appio, of the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba, revoked this Friday (3) the latest restrictions on the movement of former governor Sérgio Cabral in the country. He can now go outside at night, as well as on weekends and holidays.
Appio’s decision was taken in order to comply with the prohibitions imposed by the TRF-2 (Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region) and by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro.
Cabral is still obliged to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and is prevented from leaving the country. He also cannot stay more than eight days outside Rio de Janeiro without court authorization, as well as hold parties and social events at home.
“The defense celebrates yet another victory that unifies the different precautionary measures of the prison and gives the ex-governor freedom to come and go,” said attorney Patrícia Proetti.
Cabral left jail at the end of last year after six years in pre-trial detention on charges of charging 5% bribes on major contracts during his MDB mandate (2007-2014). The investigations discovered accounts with about R$ 300 million abroad in the name of oranges, in addition to jewelry and precious stones used, according to the Federal Public Ministry, for money laundering.
Initially, the politician denied the accusations, but two years after his arrest he decided to confess his crimes. In 2019, he managed to close an award-winning deal with the Federal Police, annulled by the STF in May 2021. In the latest testimonies to Justice and in inquiries, he was silent.
