Network has accusations of ‘coup’ and ‘farce’ before congress – 04/10/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The holding of the Sustainability Network national congress, scheduled to take place between Friday (14) and Sunday (16), in Brasília, has divided party leaders and affiliates in an unprecedented way.

In recent days, two petitions have been circulating on social networks – one defending the postponement of the meeting, and the other, its maintenance. The first, associated with the wing of the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, asks that the event be rescheduled for the month of May. The second, supported by supporters of former senator Heloísa Helena, says that “postponing the Network congress is a coup”.

According to people heard by the column, this is the first time in the history of the party in which a divergence around a congress goes beyond the internal instances of deliberation and reaches the public arena.

Among the motivations presented by the group that defends a new date for the conference are the high expenses with airline tickets, a supposed disadvantage that would be imposed on Marina’s political wing and the lack of programming for the party congress.

The costs of issuing airline tickets to state delegates would exceed R$ 1 million, according to the undersigned, since the names would still be approved and tickets would be purchased at the last minute. The amount would be paid from the party fund.

In addition to defending the reduction of expenses with public resources, the group in favor of the postponement says that Minister Marina Silva, federal deputy Túlio Gadelha (Rede-PE) and Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) will be part of the presidential delegation that will China this week and therefore will not be able to attend the congress.

“Three of the Network’s main leaders, our nationally elected representatives, are presences that we cannot do without at this moment of celebration, debates, decision-making and meetings and dialogue with our bases”, states the document, which has already collected about of 700 signatures.

The text also says that the group formed by former senator Heloísa Helena, today president of the Network and a member of the opposite wing to Marina, would benefit from the absence of the minister and Túlio Gadelha at the congress.

In response to the postponement request, a new petition was launched on Sunday (9) — this time, in favor of maintaining the congress this week. According to its organizers, more than a thousand people have joined it in less than 24 hours.

For the group associated with the second manifesto, which he composed with Heloísa Helena, Marina Silva’s wing tries to postpone a possible defeat in the election of the Network’s national executive and, therefore, asks for new dates.

Marina supports the election of the president of the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), Joenia Wapichana, as president of the Network, while Heloísa is seeking re-election.

“Instead of seeking to build unity so that we can leave the congress together, they seek bureaucratic devices to consolidate a farce. While we at Rede pela Base [corrente de Heloísa Helena] we are fighting for party unity, some leaders are working to increase conflicts even more”, says the text.

“In respect for the decisions of party instances, to everyone who organized their lives believing in the seriousness of the Network’s deliberations and in compliance with the internal regulations of our congress, widely debated and approved without reservations, the date of the congress must be maintained”, ends.

The wing that defends holding the Network’s national congress also says that “hundreds of militants have already acquired their tickets and hotel reservations”, and that the minister and the parliamentarians who will travel to China will be able to vote remotely.
