Manaus (AM) – 42.7 million adverse events are recorded annually in hospitals around the world, classified as avoidable situations, related to patient safety. The topic is being discussed in Manaus, by national and international experts. The issue is considered a serious public health problem by the World Health Organization (WHO), and can lead to complications that lead to death.

The program is part of the “I Congress and III Northern Symposium on Quality and Patient Safety”, an event organized by Qualipaciente Amazonas. The event started this Thursday (21) and continues until Saturday (23), at the Vasco Vasques Convention Center, on Avenida Constantino Nery.

Intensive care doctor Liane Cavalcante, from Qualipaciente, highlights that the event is an opportunity to debate and raise awareness among healthcare professionals at all hierarchical levels and segments, which is an extremely important subject. She highlights that, despite being part of the WHO global action plan, drawn up in 2021 and with goals to be met by 2030, patient safety still needs to be greatly reinforced in all spheres.

Liane Cavalcante explains that adverse events are any situation that occurs during the patient’s hospitalization and deviates from the natural course. The intensive care doctor cites as examples hospital infections, medication or dosage errors, falls, among countless other complications.

“Most of the time, these are avoidable situations that can be prevented with good practices, technology, among other initiatives. One of the tools we emphasize most is Quality of Care, which is a set of standards, governed by the National Accreditation Organization, so that hospitals have a systematization of care. This reduces the chance of error considerably.”

highlights.

To avoid or reduce adverse events, according to Liane Cavalcante, it is necessary to have structure, investment in quality, hospital accreditation, following the indicated protocols and, above all, the involvement of all healthcare professionals. “We need to do like the aviation sector. There is a checklist and protocols that are followed to the letter. The same goes for the health sector”, he compares.

Strategic thought

The opening lecture of the event, this Thursday (21), was with Carlos Hiran Goes de Souza, CEO of the Accreditation Pathways Institute, from Portugal, specialist in Health Planning and Administration, founding member of the International Academy of Quality and Safety in Health Care (ISQUA). He spoke on the topic “Connecting the dots for patient safety: people, processes and technology”.

According to Souza, it is necessary to develop strategic thinking based on risk, which is something that people naturally already have in their daily lives. “For example, if the child is expected to fall out of the crib, then it is necessary to have a railing. This strategic thinking must also be taken to the hospital environment. People need to internalize this culture of risk mitigation. Of course, the structure and technologies must be available to professionals,” she added.

Schedule

The program of the “I Congress and III North Symposium on Quality and Patient Safety” continues this Friday (22) from 8am to 6pm and, on Saturday (23), from 8am to 12pm. The event program includes conferences, round tables and presentation of papers, addressing the issue of patient safety, nationally and globally.

The event offers professionals the opportunity to network and exchange experience with highly reputable professionals on the subject, in an area that is fundamental to health, in the state and in the world. Among the topics under discussion are: Patient and family care; Quality Improvement; ESG in Health – results and good practices associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Impacts of Crediting on healthcare organizations; Digital transformation in healthcare – innovations, telemedicine, telehealth, artificial intelligence and others.
