Natalie Portman, 41, told The Hollywood Reporter why she decided to become a women’s soccer star. A year ago, she decided to found, together with entrepreneurs Kara Nortman and Julie Uhrman, the Angel City team, which competes in the American league of the modality.
“It’s a weird story,” said the actress. “My son is very passionate about football and when he was 7 years old, the Women’s Football World Cup took place. He was just as amazed as he was with the Men’s World Cup. He was as enchanted by the women as he was by the men. So, watching him , I thought, ‘It’s going to be a revolution if young people grow up idolizing female athletes the same way they idolize male athletes’.”
For her, the players are the ideal candidates for this. “It is evident that we have stars, these women are absolute stars”, she evaluates. “Why is it that when they play on teams in the league, nobody knows they exist? You have the most popular sport in the world and the best players in the world in the United States, and it’s completely invisible.”
Oscar winner for “Black Swan” (2010), the actress says that “definitely” there are similarities between the barriers faced by women in sports and the arts. “It feels like a very, very similar universe,” she says.
“People use box office or attendance figures per match and say things like, ‘That’s why you earn less.’ And you have to ask, ‘Well, did you advertise the same? Did you invest the same amount? same way? Was it all at the same time?’.”
“In football, it’s ‘the game was broadcast at the same time’, while in audiovisual, ‘did you put these films in the same number of cinemas?’, ‘did you spend the same amount on advertising?'”, he continues. “You have to give equal opportunities.”
A documentary series about Angel City’s first year debuted this week on HBO Max in the US. The actress should also be seen later this year in the Apple TV+ series “Lady in the Lake”.
