Múcio suggests changing the name of the GSI and keeping it under the military – 04/21/2023 – Politics

The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, declared himself against the extinction of the GSI (Institutional Security Office), but suggested a possible change of name of the body.

“To finish [com o GSI], no. What can even change the name, put another acronym. But that is necessary, it is an instrument of work and support from the President of the Republic”, he said.

Múcio defended, however, the maintenance of the cabinet in the current model, under the command of a military man. “That [a decisão sobre o comando] It’s not up to me, but I think it shouldn’t be messed with now,” he said.

The statements were made this Friday afternoon (21) in Lisbon. Múcio is part of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) entourage on his official trip to Europe in his third term.

The minister took the opportunity to praise General Gonçalves Dias, who resigned from the GSI leadership after the release of images of the internal security circuit of Planalto, revealed by CNN Brasil. The images show a collaborative action by agency agents with the coup plotters and the presence of Gonçalves Dias during the January 8 attacks.

“G. Dias is a good man, serious, well-intentioned. He is one of the best friends of the President of the Republic, a friendship built in difficult times, 20 years of friendship”, he recalled.

The general’s fate was sealed amid the refusal to release images of the invasion of Planalto.

A week after the January 8 attacks, the government released edited videos, in particular with excerpts that showed that the militants were allies of Bolsonaro. However, he refused a request from the Sheetvia the Access to Information Act, to release the entirety of the recordings.

The Minister of Defense criticized the recent wave of invasions by the MST (Landless Rural Workers Movement) and stated that the situation is not good for the government.

“I think they [MST] they are not helping. If they are supporters of the president, they are not helping. It’s not a good thing for the government, it’s not something that society accepts. These things have to be done without vandalism, without depredation”, he commented.
