Muay Thai: A martial art that has been growing in Amapá – News of Brazil

Martial arts have been gaining a lot of fans in Brazil and Muay Thai is one of them. Originally from Thailand, the modality is known as the ‘fight of the 8 weapons’, because the parts of the body are used in the blows: the two elbows, the two fists, the two knees and a combination of the two shins and the two feet. This martial art emerged more than two thousand years ago, when farmers sought ways to defend themselves in wars and invasions in Thailand.
In Amapá, the modality is growing a lot and is gaining fans of all ages. Diego Dias, 37 years old, who has been practicing muay thai for about 15 years and is a teacher at the Black Thai gym, located in the Santa Inês neighborhood, explains that this growth has generated a great development of the modality in the state.
“It has been growing and developing for more than 10 years and today it is in great demand from gyms. Many women, children, elderly people are practicing and are not only looking for quality of life, but self-defense”, explained.
Combining graduation with a passion for fighting led Diego to open an academy and begin to spread his knowledge to other people. “The desire to open the gym came when I traveled to Fortaleza to take my physical education course, and there I became a teacher. The academy is a branch in Fortaleza. We have around 60 to 70 students here, and they are divided by schedule (morning, afternoon and evening)”, explained.
PASSAGE / As it is an activity that works the whole body, muay thai brings many health benefits, in addition to challenging those who practice it to face their physical and mental limitations. “It eliminates stress, brings quality of life, loses weight and is a form of self-defense for both men and women,” said Diego.
One of the academy’s students, Kairo Matheus, 24, started training at the age of 15 after being invited by a friend. He, who is currently an instructor at Black Thai, says that the modality has become his true passion.
“It was love at first sight, the art that represents in my life and that I like to do. When I’m away from here, when I don’t come to train, I feel something is missing from me. It’s a love of the art of combat and it’s what I love to do. I hope that the art is more recognized in the state, that it is more sponsored”, he said.
Fighters use a rope tied around their arm, called a kruang, to demonstrate their rank. In order to be graduated, the student needs to go through a process, as explained by Kairo. “Here we have our master, Anderson Dentão, from Ceará, who comes to Macapá and graduates our students at the academy and each one goes through a different process. The beginners demonstrate the techniques and the others go to combat”, he said.
Muay Thai is for all ages and proof of that is Hermano Araújo, who is over 70 years old. He started in the modality about 7 years ago after being influenced by his boxing teacher.
“I started with boxing and then I was influenced, because my teacher spoke about muay thai. I started coming here to train and never left. Working with muay thai is fun, as it completes a run, a swim, in addition, it is a personal and interior defense”, he spoke
In addition to more than 60 students, Black Thai has athletes who live out of state and one of them is Walter Gonçalves, who already carries several titles on his side. “We have four athletes who live in Fortaleza, three boys and one girl. Our athlete Walter Gonçalves has lived in Thailand and has been world champion four times. Today he participates in one of the biggest fight events, which is the One Championship”, said Diego.
It is essential that the training sessions are guided by a physical education professional specialized in the modality. He will be able to respect the limits and ideal training conditions for each student.
