MST should meet mayor of SP, Kassab and minister at fair – 05/05/2023 – Panel

The MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) intends to bring together politicians from different spheres of power and ideological orientations in its Agrarian Reform Fair, which will be held between May 11th and 14th, in the Água Branca park, in Barra Funda, in São Paulo.

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the secretary of Government and Institutional Relations of the Tarcísio de Freitas administration (Republicanos-SP), Gilberto Kassab, and the minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, were invited to the event, who expressed intention to attend.

With this, the MST intends to project an image of political conciliation, in contrast to what happened at the Agrishow (International Fair of Agricultural Technology in Action), in which Minister Carlos Fávaro (Agriculture) decided not to participate after a suggestion by the organization of the event to change the day of his visit after confirming the presence of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The request, called by Fávaro a “disinvitation”, was understood as an offense by the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government, and the Minister of the Social Communication Secretariat, Paulo Pimenta, even threatened to cancel Banco do Brasil’s sponsorship of the fair.

According to organizers, the São Paulo City Hall and the state government have helped organize the fair. They also point out Kassab’s important role in allowing the event to return to the venue, after João Doria’s veto in 2019 and three years of the pandemic. The Água Branca park belongs to the state sphere, and therefore the authorization of the Palácio dos Bandeirantes is necessary.

Lula was also invited by the MST to attend the Agrarian Reform Fair.
