The MPF (Federal Public Prosecution Service) pointed to a growing harassment by contracts for the generation of carbon credits in indigenous lands in Pará and decided, for this reason, to establish a new preliminary investigation procedure to monitor the definition of protocols for these partnerships.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Redenção (PA) filed a first procedure, called news of fact, which investigated the circumstances of the signing of a contract between the company Carbonext and leaders of the Kayapó Indigenous Land, in the south of Pará, later canceled by the company.
The MPF investigated suspicions of hasty dealings, running over instances and lack of free and prior consultation. The company, in a statement, states that “it has always acted with the utmost respect for native peoples and the laws”.
With the new procedure, the Attorney’s Office intends to monitor the definition of parameters for the exploitation of carbon credits in indigenous lands in the south and southeast of Pará. The decision was taken on May 30.
As this market is not yet regulated, which is being discussed by the Lula government (PT), the recommendation is that the Union does not participate or authorize negotiations at the moment, according to a document from Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples).
The Planeta em Transe project is supported by the Open Society Foundations.
