The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) sent this Monday (17) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) an opinion in favor of revoking the preventive detention of former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres. Last week, Torres’ defense asked that Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the case’s rapporteur, be released. From the action, the minister asked for the opinion of the PGR, which responded this Monday.

Since January 14, Torres has been under arrest as a result of investigations into acts of vandalism that took place on the 8th of that month. At the time, the former Minister of Justice was at the head of the Security Secretariat of the Federal District. The investigation at the STF investigates alleged omissions in the containment of the acts, informed Agência Brasil.

In the document, the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Carlos Frederico Santos understood that Torres may comply with precautionary measures other than prison, such as the use of an electronic ankle bracelet, prohibition of leaving the Federal District and maintaining contact with other investigated persons, in addition to remaining away from the position of delegate of the Federal Police, a function he exercised before entering public life.

“Considering the current scenario of the investigations, there are precautionary measures other than the prison that more adequately fulfill the purposes in question”, said the PGR. Lawyers told the Supreme Court that the former minister poses no risk to investigations and asked that the arrest be replaced by precautionary measures. There is no deadline for Moraes’ decision on the request for freedom.
