The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) demanded this Tuesday (9) information from the messaging application Telegram Brasil about the message sent by the platform to its users in the country, with a position contrary to bill 2.630/2020, known as PL of Fake News. In the message fired, the company argues that the project represents “an attack on democracy”.

According to the platform, the proposal “grant censorship powers” to the federal government and create a permanent surveillance system that “will kill the modern Internet”, reported Agência Brasil. Telegram still threatens that if the PL passes with the current wording, in the National Congress, “companies like Telegram may have to stop providing services in Brazil”.

In the official letter, the MPF questioned whether the platform has a channel for contestation by those users who disagree with the network’s positioning. The letter was signed by the Public Prosecutor, Yuri Corrêa Luz, from the Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office for Citizens’ Rights in São Paulo, from the MPF.

The MPF-SP also asked whether the company describes to consumers, in the terms of use of the application, an authorization to boost messages not related to technical updates or communications about application features. The body asks why the shooting was carried out to all users of the platform, and not just those subscribed to the Telegram Notifications channel. Telegram Brasil will have a period of 10 days to answer the questions.
