MP investigates fraud in Brazilian games to benefit betting

The Public Ministry of the State of Goiás launched this Tuesday (14) an operation, called “Maximum Penalty”, in search of evidence of a criminal association specialized in the manipulation of results of professional soccer matches.
HOW DOES THE SCHEME WORK?
The aim of the scheme is to enable success in high value sports betting. In return, athletes receive part of the winnings, in case of success. It is estimated that each suspect received approximately R$ 150,000 per bet.
Investigations point out that the criminal group acts by co-opting athletes to manipulate results in matches through actions such as, for example, committing penalties in the first half of games.
There are elements that the group acted concretely in at least three matches of Série B 2022 and it is estimated that the amounts involved in the scheme exceed the amount of BRL 600 thousand.
THE SEARCHES AND THOSE INVOLVED IN THE OPERATION
The warrants are being fulfilled in Goiânia (GO), São João del-Rei (MG), Cuiabá (MT), São Paulo (SP), São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and Porciúncula (RJ).
The action was triggered by the MP-GO through the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco), the Institutional Security and Intelligence Coordination (CSI) and the Special Action Group in Major Football Events (GFUT).
The Military, Civil and Criminal Police of Goiás supported the operation, in addition to the Gaecos of the States of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, the Cyber Gaeco of the State of São Paulo and the Intelligence Center of the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro
