Moro says government will not solve security problem by giving funds to NGOs

One day after being pointed out as the main target of an action that the PCC was planning against politicians, authorities and public servants, Senator Sérgio Moro (União Brasil-PR) said that the federal government needs to review spending on public security policies to the population, and send projects to Congress that show the directions being taken.

The measures taken so far are said to be insufficient to contain the escalation of violence that, in addition to the plans of the criminal faction, also includes attacks on public and private property in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, since the beginning of last week.

According to the senator, the policies that are being implemented by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) have proved to be “very fragile”, such as the new phase of Pronasci, the National Program for Public Security with Citizenship launched last week, which will only pass on resources to social and non-governmental organizations to train police officers with the government’s vision. R$ 700 million will be spent this year.

“Not that this is not relevant, but a public security program cannot be based on this type of project to the detriment of investment in police forces, intelligence and strategies against organized crime and violent crime,” he said in an interview with Jovem Pan.

According to him, the first phase of Pronasci, between 2007 and 2016 – during the second Lula administration and the two of Dilma Rousseff (PT) –, there was an increase in crime in the country, with the number of murders rising from 44 thousand to 57 thousand a year.

“What worries me is the lack of a coherent public policy in the field of public security”, he said, recalling the cases of robberies carried out by fake couriers in São Paulo and attacks in Rio Grande do Norte.

Moro also emphasized that much of this lack of a coherent public security policy is directly reflected in the daily lives of the population, such as the occurrence of simple crimes in the streets that, in the end, are linked to organized crime. No wonder, he proposed a bill that intends to toughen the fight against crime, with the reinforcement of security forces and improvement in public policies.

In a speech in the Senate, on Wednesday (22), he asked parliamentarians from both the opposition and the government base to support the vote on the project, as a “gesture” mainly on the part of the Executive Branch to get the approval of the new legislation.
