Moro criticizes Lula’s speech and asks for government support for a project against organized crime

Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) again criticized, this Wednesday (22), the statement by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) – that the PT wanted to take revenge on the now former judge when he was arrested at the Federal Police, in Curitiba -, and asked for the federal government’s support for the bill that intends to make it a crime to plan attacks by criminal factions against public agents and authorities.

Moro ordered the arrest of the petista when he was the titular judge of the 13th Federal Court, in the capital of Paraná. “When the president says he intends to take revenge, he exposes me and my family, in a way, to risk, because he encourages behaviors that are often influenced by minds, which can put us in a vulnerable situation”, said Moro during the session. Senate plenary.

The senator said he would like a “gesture” on the part of the Executive to overcome the episode of the statement made by the president. “I would like, more than a word, a gesture. I would like to have, for example, the support of the federal government, the representatives of the Workers’ Party, the base of the government for this project, which is supra-party, so that we can overcome and redeem this episode”, he pointed out.

Moro says attack plan would be retaliation

Moro also stated that the attack plan organized by a group linked to the First Command of the Capital (PCC) against him would be a “retaliation” for his work as Minister of Justice in the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). “I made this project to create penal types, so that we can punish the planning of these actions, these attacks against authorities or people involved in the fight against organized crime”, he said.

“What I was informed is that a PCC cell had this plan to kidnap me or my family as a form of retaliation for the work I did as a judge and, mainly, as Minister of Justice, when we were tough against crime organised,” he said.

Moro pointed out that during his administration, the Ministry of Justice provided for the “isolation of PCC leaders in federal prisons” and changed the regime to prevent unmonitored communications with the outside world of these leaders.

This morning, the Federal Police launched Operation Sequaz to dismantle a criminal organization that intended to carry out attacks against public servants and authorities, including Moro.

Senator learned of threats in January

Moro said he was informed at the end of January by the Public Ministry of São Paulo about the threats against him and his family. The parliamentarian stated that he is “alarmed by the escalation of organized crime in the country”. He defended the adoption of “strict policies” in the fight against criminal organizations.

“If they come at us with a knife, we have to use a gun. If they use a gun, we have to have a machine gun. If they have a machine gun, we have to have a tank or a tank . Not in the literal sense, but we need to react to the actions of organized crime”, he said.

“We need to have legislation that guarantees the punishment of these individuals, without waiting for them to start carrying out the crime,” he added.

Solidarity in the Senate

During the session, Moro’s speech was interrupted for 25 senators to comment on the case and show solidarity with the parliamentarian and his family. The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), highlighted the commitment of the Legislative Police to guarantee the safety of Moro and his family.

Pacheco said that the threat to Moro is “an attack on the Federal Senate institution”, on the rule of law and on democracy. The President of the House also said that the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, “did not spare efforts to make the state apparatus work as a state apparatus and not as a government apparatus”.
