Moro and PSDB support Marinho; government mobilizes for Pacheco – 01/31/2023 – Power

On the eve of the elections for the presidency of the Senate, Bolsonarist Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) obtained the public support of former minister Sergio Moro (União Brasil), members of the PSDB and PSD, the acronym of the current president, Rodrigo Pacheco ( PSD-MG).

The candidate for re-election, on the other hand, received the support of ministers in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), and should count on the campaign of at least six members of the Esplanada dos Ministérios in this Wednesday’s session (1st).

In the PSD, the vote of at least three senators in Marinho was already on Pacheco’s radar. The announcement was made this Tuesday (31) by Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS), Samuel Araújo (PSD-RO) and Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP) —political rival of Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) and Randolfe Rodrigues ( Network-AP).

Minutes before the support, however, Araújo attended a lunch at the home of Senator Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA) in support of Pacheco. According to people who participated in the meeting, Araújo stated that he will vote for his party colleague.

“We have a party candidate, we have nothing against him. [É uma] educated, balanced person, but who had his moment. Now it’s time for renewal for the good of our country’s politics”, said Trad to the press, alongside Marinho and former ministers of the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“We are convinced that we have the necessary number to win”, stated Marinho. “The government has acted incisively. It is the rule of the game”, he added, saying that the government has been moving because it is concerned about not being able to keep an ally in the presidency of the House.

Senators who support Pacheco claim, however, that the vote is secret, and that it will be possible to win in the first round. To win the dispute, the candidate needs 41 votes.

Allies of the president say he has at least 46, but he could repeat the result of 2021, when he received 57.

This Tuesday, the Ministers of Justice, Flávio Dino (PSB-MA), and of Science and Technology, Márcio França (PSB-SP), signed a letter from the Senate’s PSB bench in support of Pacheco. The Minister of Transport, Renan Filho (MDB-AL), participated in a pro-Pacheco act promoted by the acronym in the Senate.

“The PSB bench, meeting this Tuesday at the party’s headquarters, when analyzing the candidacies put forward for the Presidency of the Federal Senate, decided, unanimously, to pledge full support for the re-election of Senator Rodrigo Pacheco”, says the note from the PSB.
