Moraes votes to convict 29 8/1 defendants with sentences of up to 17 years

In the early hours of this Friday (15), the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, voted for the conviction of another 29 defendants accused by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of participating in the acts of January 8 . The penalties suggested by the minister range from 14 to 17 years in prison, in addition to collective damages worth R$30 million.

“The scale of the episode prompted official demonstrations from political leaders from numerous countries, religious leaders, and international organizations, all of whom are certainly aware of the impacts that criminal conduct of this nature can have on a global scale and the fact that, unfortunately, they are not circumscribed. to the Brazilian reality, in view, for example, of the regrettable events that occurred in January 2021, which culminated in the invasion of the United States Capitol”, says an excerpt from the order issued by the minister.

At least another 30 defendants have already been convicted by the Supreme Court for their alleged involvement in 8/1, with sentences ranging from 14 to 17 years in prison. In total, the PGR denounced 1,345 people, but 1,113 complaints were suspended so that the Prosecutor’s Office could evaluate the possibility of agreements to avoid convictions.

The cases are being judged in a virtual plenary session, when ministers simply cast their votes without discussion. The trials of this group will run until February 5th, if there is no request for review or highlighting, which would temporarily suspend the analysis or take the case to the in-person plenary.

The 29 defendants are being tried as part of Inquiry No. 4,922, which investigates the crimes of armed criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état and qualified damage.

The alleged intellectual authors of the protests are being investigated as part of Inquiry No. 4,921 and are charged with incitement to crime and criminal association.
