Moraes says that big techs must respond for all monetized and boosted content – 03/31/2023 – Politics

The minister of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) Alexandre de Moraes said this Friday (31) that he will suggest to Congress that big techs be held responsible for all monetized and boosted content. According to him, this proposal changes the idea that platforms are only intermediaries.

The measures are part of his view that platforms should be treated as media and not technology companies. He said that the platforms were cooperative in the election, within their vision of the business, but that there is a complete lack of responsibility.

“What happens today is a total irresponsibility of those who take the news to thousands of people”, he said. “January 8th is the great example of how the networks are being used. Several measures were already destructive and were allowed to proliferate.”

According to Moraes, last year the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) waited “up to the limit” for Congress to act in relation to the proliferation of false news. As this did not happen, the court acted with a resolution that increased its powers to remove content.

He also wants artificial intelligence, already used to track pedophilia, for example, to be used to automatically block posts inciting violence, racism, Nazism, among others.

“We can’t stop regulating otherwise there’s only the extreme decision to take it off the air. It’s 8 or 80. As it was with Telegram.”

Another point that he will take to Congress is that all contents identical to others that have already been knocked down are automatically excluded from the networks. The measure was already foreseen in the TSE resolution published during the election.

The minister also said that the discourse that the Judiciary wants to limit freedom of expression is a constant narrative of the far right around the world because it is an easy discourse.

The issue has been debated by the STF, which this week promoted a public hearing on the Marco Civil da Internet this week.
