Moraes releases 52 more prisoners after coup attacks on 1/8 – 03/02/2023 – Politics

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), granted provisional release, under certain conditions, to another 52 people denounced for involvement in the coup attacks of January 8.

The decisions were signed this Wednesday (1st) and Thursday (2nd). They add to another 173 releases determined by Moraes in the last week.

According to the STF, currently 751 people are still in prison and 655 have been released from prison.

The decision precedes a meeting of Moraes with opposition senators, who will plead that the minister revoke the arrest of investigated persons who did not directly participate in the depredation of the headquarters of the three Powers.

Those investigated who were released must wear an electronic ankle bracelet and comply with other measures ordered by the minister, such as a ban on the use of social networks.

All of them were denounced by the PGR (Attorney General of the Republic) for incitement to crime and criminal association. The suspects must present a prior defense to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks.

They were arrested red-handed on the morning of January 9 in front of the Army’s headquarters in Brasilia.

As the investigations did not identify the accused as the main financiers or executors of the acts, Moraes considered that they will be able to answer freely. The minister also considered that most of them have the condition of first offender and minor children.

The released suspects will not be able to leave the region where they live and must stay at home at night and on weekends.

Every Monday, they must appear in court and cannot leave the country.

Moraes determined the obligation to hand over passports and the immediate suspension of any documents for carrying firearms and registration certificates to carry out sport shooting and hunting activities.

Communication with others investigated for involvement in coup acts is also prohibited.
