Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), accepted the hearing request submitted by a group of eight senators who lead the opposition and will receive them at 1 pm this Thursday (2). The agenda is about the conditions in which the now 751 prisoners are found in the acts in Praça dos Três Poderes, on January 8. So far, 655 have been released to respond in freedom, following precautionary measures, such as the use of electronic anklets.
The meeting with the rapporteur of the inquiry that investigates the circumstances and those involved in the depredations in Brasilia takes place while Congress is evaluating the installation of parliamentary commissions of inquiry (CPI) to deal with the issue and allegations of abuses of justice against the rights of detainees.
In the application, the parliamentarians show concern about the high occupancy rate of the two prisons in Brasília, Papuda (men) and Colmeia (women), due to the arrests carried out on January 8 and 9, as it would reflect “directly on the quality of service of food and health”, as some senators affirmed after visits to the places last week. They also complain about the lack of individualized information about the responsibilities of those involved.
The presence of senators Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), leader of the opposition in the Senate; Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), minority leader in Congress; Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), minority leader in the Senate; Wellington Fagundes (PL-MT), leader of the Vanguarda block (PP, Republicans and Novo) and party leaders in Casa Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), Tereza Cristina (PP-MS); Mecias de Jesus (Republicans-RR); and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).
On February 24 last, senators Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), Magno Malta (PL-ES) and Rogério Marinho made the same considerations to the President of the STF, Minister Rosa Weber. They asked her to urge Moraes on the possibility of an audience with the magistrate.
Moraes releases another 52 prisoners on January 8
This Thursday, Moraes granted provisional release to another 52 accused of involvement in the acts, taking into account that the investigations did not point to them as financiers or main executors.
The newly released persons can also respond freely through a series of precautionary measures, such as house arrest at night and on weekends using an electronic anklet, in addition to passport cancellation and suspension of carrying a firearm.
