The President of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Alexandre de Moraes, met this Wednesday (1st) with representatives of digital platforms to discuss proposals for regulating social networks. The minister thanked the platforms for their efforts to combat fake news during the 2022 election period.
During the meeting, Moraes suggested the creation of “a joint working group to present proposals for improving self-regulation and to forward suggestions for regulation to the National Congress”, informed the TSE.
“I have no doubt that, if it is not something built together and, mainly, based on the self-regulation of the platforms themselves, the chance of being efficient is very small”, said the President of the Electoral Court. The minister defended a “two-way cooperation”, so that “two distinct plans” could be built.
One of them would be aimed at taking advantage of what the platforms themselves have in terms of mechanisms and tools for carrying out self-control in some themes, such as pedophilia, child pornography, and expanding to the control of hate speech and anti-democratic attacks. The “second important point is to establish the level of responsibility of the platforms, especially for content where there is monetization and boosting by algorithms”, according to the TSE.
Representatives of the digital platforms Tik Tok, Twitter, Meta (WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram), Telegram, YouTube, Google and Kwai participated in the meeting in Brasilia.
