Religious leaders, artists and politicians spoke out on social media to raise awareness among the population about the importance of participating in the election of the guardianship council, which tends to be small given the non-obligatory nature of voting. More than 30 thousand new councilors will be elected across the country this Sunday (1st). Voting will take place from 8 am to 5 pm.

Guardianship councils have relevant responsibilities related to defending the rights of children and adolescents. As they are responsible for receiving complaints, representatives of the right and left fear that the actions of the elected councilors are ideological, with false accusations against the families. Complaints requesting the loss of custody of children, made by counselors, tend to be easily accepted by the Judiciary.

Among the demonstrations surrounding this Sunday’s elections, it is not difficult to find an exchange of accusations between right and left. O Pastor Silas Malafaia posted a video talking about the election. In the video, he comments on the speech raised by the left that accuses evangelicals of “abusing religious power” when occupying positions in guardianship councils. Malafaia comments on the rule of the Superior Electoral Court that prohibited the advertising of candidates during religious times. “Vote for someone who has your principles and values”, he concludes.

Manuela D´Ávila also spoke out on the networks. “Protect our children, protect the mothers of our children from the Brazilian extreme right,” said D´Ávila. “They want to dominate the lives of our communities through the councils, we need to resist”, she reiterates and encourages the creation of broadcast lists to promote left-wing candidates.

The chef Paola Carosella, the federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), the state deputy of Paraná Renato Freitas (PT-PR), the minister of Human Rights Silvio de Almeida and the comedian Concessa are among the personalities who used the social networks in an attempt to make their followers aware of the topic.

A People’s Gazette showed that conservatives organized themselves for the elections of guardianship councilors. In Curitiba, groups mobilized to support new candidates, in addition to holding a kind of hearing with the current guardianship councilors in the region. All of this to prevent people in the position from being inefficient or defending issues such as drug legalization and gender ideology. The idea is that there will be similar mobilizations for future elections for other councils, such as education and health.

Voting will take place from 8 am to 5 pm this Sunday (1st). Anyone over 16 years old, with a voter registration card and regular status with the electoral court can vote. You must present an identification document with photo or e-title at the polling place. It is worth checking the voting location on the websites of the Regional Electoral Courts, as, in some cities, the voting location will be different from that of the 2022 elections.
