MMA legend Maurício Shogun says goodbye to the octagon with loss to Potieria

A career of titles, knockouts and victories came to an end. The legend Maurício Shogun Rua officially said goodbye to the octagons this Saturday, at UFC 283, held at Jeunesse Arena, in Rio de Janeiro. Facing the Ukrainian Ihor Potieria, the Brazilian was defeated by technical knockout in the first round. But that did not lessen the applause from the Brazilian public.
– Sorry. I wanted to end my career with a victory for you. I did my best, I did my best. I was here today tired, I’ve been fighting for 21 years. In the UFC for 16 years. Thanks to the UFC for everything. Thank you to my fans all over the world. You’ve always been my biggest fuel,” lamented Shogun.
Shogun’s future away from the UFC is still unknown. Rumors are that the 41-year-old from Curitiba would be migrating to boxing, something he tried to deny in the last press conference before UFC Rio.
Shogun says goodbye after more than 20 years of career as a professional fighter, starting in Vale-Tudo and accompanying the evolution of the modality to MMA. Among the most memorable moments are the world titles in 2005, in Pride, after winning against Ricardo Arona, and in 2010, in the UFC, when he beat Lyoto Machida.
Opponent of Mauricio Shogun, the Ukrainian Ihor Potieria is 26 years old and has a record of 18 wins and three losses in MMA.
How was the fight
Pushed by the public, Shogun started the fight dominating the center of the octagon and hitting a nice cross. However, a slip when trying to apply a blow led to the chance and almost created greater problems. That turned the fight around. Potieria managed to connect good blows and took the Brazilian to the ground once again. With no reaction, the fight was ended by technical knockout.
