The Ministry of Justice notified this Thursday (13) the digital platforms to explain the measures they are adopting to restrict content in support of violence in educational institutions. Social networks will have up to 72 hours to send a report on “monitoring, limitation and restriction of content that incites violence against schools and students”, according to the folder.

The period will start counting from the receipt of the notifications issued this Thursday by the national consumer secretary, Wadih Damous, informed Agência Brasil. The request for notifications comes a day after the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, signed an ordinance that obliges companies to immediately remove content that promotes violence upon request from the competent authorities.

According to the secretary, social networks are not neutral in relation to the content published on them, when they determine the reach of publications, suggest posts and accounts, in addition to defining what can be moderated. Damous explains that Senacon has the authority to notify networks because the ordinance itself reinforces that content moderation involves consumer relations between the user and the social network.

The secretary warned that, at this moment, the networks themselves will be able to regulate the removal of publications that incite violence in their terms of use, but he did not rule out the possibility that the Ministry of Justice determines the exclusion of posts if the platforms keep them on the air. In case of non-compliance with orders made by Senacon, companies will be subject to fines and even the suspension of activities. The punishment will be determined according to the seriousness of the infraction.
