The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, recently participated in a public hearing held by the Legislative Chamber of the State of Amapá, which seeks solutions for desalination of the waters of the Bailique archipelago and for the resolution of the phenomenon of fallen land, which causes the collapse of the banks of the Amazon River, caused by the violent force of the tide in the region.
In his speech during the online session, Waldez Góes highlighted that he will be responsible for creating a Federal Government Working Group to dialogue with the state of Amapá in resolving these two issues. “There are many public entities that already hold knowledge, research and information. We need to bring all this together in a relationship of permanent dialogue between the federal and state governments. This is key,” he stated.
“We are going to carry out dialogue with other ministries in the search for joint solutions to the problems that the archipelago faces, both in social and economic terms”, he added.
On the issue of groundwater desalination, the MIDR is going to carry out studies to see how to make this initiative viable in the region. One of the possibilities is through the Água Doce Program, which provides for the construction of desalination plants. “We have been carrying out studies to modernize the ways of getting drinking water to those who need it most. And we will also do this in the case of Bailique”, highlighted Waldez Góes.
The minister also stressed the importance of resolving the issue of fallen land. “This is a problem in Brazil, because we are talking about the mouth of the Amazon, where the river meets the sea, where, over time, a phenomenon has emerged that, in addition to interfering in the social and economic life of those communities, awakens a need for a more structured response”, he evaluated.
The president of the Association of Agroextractivist Producers of Ilha Franco (APAIF), Raimundo dos Santos Quaresma, represented the Bailique communities at the event. According to him, a technical study is needed to understand the cause of the phenomenon, in addition to the solution to avoid the situation. He pointed out other difficulties that the local population faces. “We have difficulties with electricity, walkways and infrastructure.
We are willing to have partnerships with all bodies, both municipal, state and federal, so that we can improve the lives of the population”, he pointed out.
