Minister of Human Rights lends solidarity to PT councilor impeached in SC – 02/04/2023 – Panel

Minister Silvio Almeida (Human Rights and Citizenship) expressed this Saturday (4) solidarity with councilor Maria Tereza Capra (PT), impeached by the City Council of São Miguel do Oeste (SC) for repudiating a gesture considered Nazi made by coup demonstrators during a blockade to a road in the city in November.
In a note, the ministry says it acts to preserve the physical integrity and civil and political rights of the parliamentarian. “Political and gender-based violence, hate speech and anti-democratic threats are and will be vigorously opposed by the MDHC, which reiterates its unshakable commitment to the democratic rule of law in this country”, states the statement.
The ministry says that the councilwoman has been assisted within the scope of the program to protect human rights defenders, communicators and environmentalists. The note also indicates that she “is being monitored by the federal team, which has adopted emergency measures in order to keep her safe.”
The councilor was impeached early this Saturday. By 10 votes to 1, the councilors considered that she broke parliamentary decorum by, according to the report of the commission of inquiry, “spreading false news and attributing to the citizens of Santa Catarina and the municipality the crime of giving a Nazi salute and being the birthplace of of a neo-Nazi cell”.
On a social network, Maria Tereza Capra criticized demonstrators who blocked the SC-163 highway, in São Miguel do Oeste. The group, while singing the national anthem, made a gesture reminiscent of the Nazi salute “Sieg Heil”, which means “save the victory”.
“Moreover, these demonstrators still gave a Nazi salute. They raised their hands in that position. This is repeating one of the most dramatic moments. I would say the worst drama that the world’s population has experienced, which was Nazism. Millions of Jews, millions of people were killed in the name of race improvement,” she wrote.
