Minister of Communications does not act in debate on Fake News – 02/05/2023 – Panel

Minister of Communications for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Juscelino Filho has not participated in the debates regarding the so-called Fake News PL, which involves the relationship with large companies in the area, the big techs.

Since April 20, after returning from a trip to China, the minister has received visits from federal deputies, mayors and councilors, most from his party (União Brasil) or his state (Maranhão). He also participated in inaugurations and events, but did not engage with the theme of the bill.

This Tuesday (2), for example, while the fate of the matter was articulated in the Chamber, he was in a meeting with the mayor of São Raimundo das Mangabeiras, Accioly Cardoso (PSD-MA), according to a publication on his social networks, in the which did not take a position on the subject.

Juscelino Filho is weakened in office due to a series of complaints against him since the beginning of the government, such as accusations of irregularities involving daily rates received for an event about horses and the paving of a road, with amendment resources, near his farm in Maranhão .

In a note, the ministry says that it has been following the discussions on PL 2630/2020, “always respecting the independence between the three Powers”. He also affirms that, in the structure of the federal government, the theme is being discussed by the Secretariat of Communication, commanded by Paulo Pimenta, and that the participation of Juscelino’s ministry has occurred through Anatel, ” which, when provoked, has positioned itself before congressmen in a very clear and purposeful way”.

The folder also states that it recognizes the need to intensify dialogue between the affected agents and the urgency of creating mechanisms to protect Brazilian society from the damage caused by the spread of fake news.
