Minister denies concern with MST after invasions – 02/03/2023 – Panel

The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, denied this Thursday (2nd) that there is concern about the political aspect of recent invasions by the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) on productive properties.

Members of the movement invaded three Suzano Celulose farms, in the extreme south of Bahia in the early hours of Monday (27), in the municipalities of Mucuri, Teixeira de Freitas and Caravelas.

Paulo Teixeira says that he was approached by representatives of Suzano on Wednesday (1st) night and met with them this Thursday (2nd) morning. The company reported that the reason for the invasion would be an agreement signed in 2011 for the settlement of 600 families, which would not have been fully complied with.

“There is a problem over there with an agreement they made, which was not fulfilled. I agreed with Suzano that they are going to recover the memory of that agreement and I am going to ask the MST to leave the area”, he explains.

Next Wednesday (8), the minister will meet with Suzano again, but this time with the MST present, at the request of the company. She asked only that the invaders leave the land before the meeting.

Asked whether the episode did not generate tension due to the risk of further invasions, the minister denied it. “Each day with its agony.”

The relationship between the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the MST tends to be delicate, and is the target of criticism from agribusiness.

As the Panel showed, the national coordinator, João Paulo Rodrigues, wrote on his social networks a message critical of the government’s delay in choosing the direction of Incra, the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform, and states that it is “beginning to light the yellow light”.
