In his first agenda after taking office, the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino (União Brasil), met with the Extraordinary Secretary for Tax Reform of the Ministry of Finance, Bernard Appy, to discuss the impact of the matter on the sector.
The agenda, which had already been set a few weeks ago, was requested by the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, who had been advocating that the PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution) that changes the tax system contemplate travel agencies and activities that were left out of the text.
Appy suggested the creation of a working group formed by members of the Ministries of Finance and Tourism, Embratur and businessmen to calculate the impacts on the sector. Based on this, a proposal would be drawn up to be taken to Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance).
Sector businessmen say that the reform will increase the segment’s tax burden and will make Brazilian tourism more expensive, making it less competitive internationally — estimates by sector associations point to an increase of up to 430%.
