The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, argues that research on oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River should not be prevented. According to him, they are studies “to learn about the mineral potential of Brazil”.
Silveira told interlocutors that he was in favor of dialogue, even more so on an issue so sensitive to the country, and maintained that it was important to find convergence between economic development and sustainability.
This Wednesday (17th), Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) refused the request to carry out feasibility studies for oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River. The president of the institute, Rodrigo Agostinho, mentioned the lack of information to guarantee safe conditions for the undertaking to continue.
MME sources report that Silveira had already sent an official letter to Petrobras requesting the completion of the data as requested by Ibama. The last one would have been sent last week.
Faced with the denial, the Amapá bench mobilized to reverse the decision. Senator Davi Alcolumbre intends to exert political pressure on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and members of the government. The leader in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues, left the Sustainability Network, party of the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva.
