President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) asked the Minister of Cities, Jader Filho, to structure a line of Minha Casa, Minha Vida to build housing for people in risk areas.
The request was made during a trip to the north coast of São Paulo, where heavy rains have already caused 36 deaths and left 766 people homeless and another 1,730 homeless; there are still 40 missing.
According to the minister, a mapping of priority regions is already well under way, conducted by the newly created National Secretariat of Policies for Peripheral Territories. But, as it is a preventive action, it still needs to go through a bidding process and there is no deadline for the beginning of the works.
“We’re going to discuss both. Minister Waldez [Goés, da Integração e Desenvolvimento Regional] Will discuss what is urgent. Subsequently, the mayor [de São Sebatião, Felipe Augusto] we also had to discuss with us the part of units for the removal of those who live on slopes”, he reports.
This Monday (20) Lula interrupted the rest of Carnival in Bahia to inspect the areas affected by the rains. He was accompanied by a delegation of ministers, including Jader Filho. In a statement to the press, the president mentioned the need to rehouse the homeless.
“Once in a while nature preaches a surprise to us, but also many times we challenge nature […]. That’s why I wanted you [se dirigindo ao prefeito de São Sebastião, Felipe Augusto, PSDB] think of a safe place so that we could start rebuilding the homes of the people of São Sebastião”, said Lula.
Felipe Augusto has already pointed out to the federal government four plots of land that could be used for the construction of new homes. The emergency part for those affected by the landslides will be conducted by the Civil Defense, subordinated to the Ministry of National Integration.
According to technicians involved in the discussions, there is still a budget obstacle for the new Minha Casa, Minha Vida line. There are currently R$ 179 million available, considered insufficient for the size of the demand.
