Milk signals readjustment at all levels of education

At the center of the government’s focus, education in the State was the subject of the meeting between Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB), five secretaries and the board of directors of the Center for Teachers of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Cpers-Sindicato). On the occasion, Leite signaled the possibility of readjustment in the salary for servers of the state education network who earn above the national floor for the category – one of the main claims of the class.

“The question is: will we use the index that was given for readjustment in the floor to readjust the remuneration table (for other salary levels)? Well, this already comes up against the financial capacity of the State and even in the Fiscal Responsibility Law. (… ) Since we want to value teachers, if we have assured resources, we will make the best possible adjustment that is not unsustainable”, said Leite, in a press conference after the meeting with Cpers this Monday (6).

In January, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT), informed that the national minimum wage for teaching will rise from R$3,845.63 to R$4,420.55 in 2023. The new value corresponds to an increase of 14.95%.

Today, the government is working to find ways to pay this readjustment granted only to teachers who receive the minimum wage. As a result of the decrease in State revenue due to the loss of ICMS collection, Rio Grande do Sul loses around R$ 5 billion annually.

“The National Congress took a decision that took money from education, health, security by forcibly reducing taxes at subnational levels – from states to municipalities – by reducing ICMS. (…) A wrong decision that forced a reduction in collection states,” said the toucan.

Even with the decrease in revenue and the increase in personnel costs – last year, there was a general readjustment of 6% for civil servants in Rio Grande do Sul – the governor guarantees that he will pay the minimum wage for teachers: “The State will pay the minimum. “, promised Leite.

The issue would be the possibility of meeting Cpers’ request, which understands that the 14.95% readjustment should be applied to all levels of the category.

“I have no doubt that it is part of the strategy to improve education that we can have a future salary perspective that attracts professionals. Not just good salaries, but that has adequate structure, investments, technological resources for a teacher to perform his/her function and professionally.

This Tuesday (7), Leite travels to Brasília to meet with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), in search of a clearer position from the federal government in relation to ICMS losses. Therefore, she scheduled a new meeting with Cpers for Tuesday (14) of next week to present a possible new perspective after the meeting in the federal capital.
