President also reduced the number of ministries from 18 to 9
The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, signed last Sunday (10) a decree that modifies a rule established during the government of former president Mauricio Macri. This rule prohibited the appointment of relatives to public administration positions. On his first day as president, Milei signed 13 decrees.
The decree was from 2018, signed by former president Mauricio Macri, which prevented relatives of elected members from serving in the public sector. With that, Milei then appointed her sister, Karina, as first lady and general secretary of the government.
The first lady of Argentina is responsible for social and sometimes diplomatic activities. As general secretary, Karina will help the president with public policies, preparing communiqués, participating in ceremonial and protocol tasks, as well as managing relations with the public, according to the Argentine press.
The other decrees dealt with the reorganization of ministries. Milei reduced the number of portfolios from 18 to 9 (read more below), and appointed the ministers of the Civil House, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Defense, Economy, Security, Health, Justice, Infrastructure and Capital Human.
Reduction of ministries
In his 8th decree, Milei reduced the number of ministries from 18 to 9. As a result, previous portfolios were divided between the new ministries.
According to the Argentine newspaper “La Nación”, the design will be as follows:
- What was the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will pass to the head of the Civil House, as well as the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs.
- The former Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and Tourism and Sport will now be integrated into the Ministry of the Interior.
- The now extinct Transport, Public Works and Habitat and Territorial Development will be secretariats of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
- Human Capital will be responsible for the Social Security, Education, Culture, Labor and the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity portfolios.
