Metro and CPTM say privatization is just a discussion – 10/02/2023 – Panel

The presidents of Metrô, Julio Castiglioni, and CPTM, Pedro Moro, see “truculence” and undemocratic behavior in the strike scheduled for this Tuesday (3).

According to what they told the Panel, those responsible are denying the successful project at the polls, by using a strike to protest against the private sector’s participation in the two companies.

“What is regrettable is that this discussion, which is legitimate, is held in an illegitimate field, in a non-democratic arena. This is a programmatic issue, which was approved at the polls. The discussion can be carried forward in different ways in hearings, in parliamentary houses, or through the press. But a strike like that has an endless number of negative consequences”, says Castiglioni.

According to him, the discussion on privatization of companies has not yet reached a decision. “It’s a premature time to treat this issue as something certain,” he says.

The privatization of the two companies, he says, is “one of several possibilities”. “None of this is done behind closed doors. Between privatizing and keeping things as they are, there are countless possible models”, he declares.

The only lines where there will be no strike are precisely the privatized ones — 4-yellow, 5-lilac, 8-diamond and 9-emerald.

Last week, the Labor Court determined parameters for the strike, requiring 100% operation at peak times and 80% at other times. In case of non-compliance, there will be a fine of R$500,000 per day, in the case of CPTM, and R$100,000 per day for each union entity, in the case of Metrô.

“If the decision is not complied with, we will seek the execution of this fine. We will seek punishment. We will not negotiate the public interest”, says the metro president.
