The conquest of the Leagues Cup by Inter Miami gave an important number for Lionel Lionel Messi. With the 10-9 victory over Nashville SC on penalties, after a 1-1 draw on Saturday night (19), the Argentine became the record holder for professional football achievements.
The trophy raised at Geodis Park, in Nashville, in the United States, was the 42nd of the player’s career. The count —which disregards the 2005 Under-20 World Cup with Argentina, as it was an amateur competition, and the Spanish Super Cup of the same year, for which the then young Barcelona striker was not linked— leaves the star tied with the Brazilian Daniel Alves, who was his partner at Barcelona, as the owner of the greatest number of titles in the sport.
If Messi already has more than four dozen achievements, it was the first for Inter Miami, founded in 2018. The 36-year-old athlete joined the team less than a month ago and has already shown him the path to victory in his first tournament, disputed by teams from the United States and Mexico.
And the veteran was no mere supporting actor. Top scorer of the event with ten goals in seven appearances, the Argentine scored in all matches. In the final, he opened the scoring in a beautiful move, in which he cut the marker and hit from outside the area.
