Argentine playmaker Lionel Messi won two categories of the Laureus Awards, whose ceremony was held this Monday (8) in Paris. The player was elected “Best Male Athlete” and was part of the “Best Team” of the year alongside his teammates in the Argentine national team, world champion in December last year.
At the age of 35, the player is the first to win two awards in the same edition of the Laureus.
Winner of seven Golden Balls, the Paris Saint-Germain striker had already won the award for best athlete of the year in 2020, along with British driver Lewis Hamilton, seven times F1 world champion.
The Argentine, who returned to PSG training on Monday after being suspended by the club for traveling to Saudi Arabia without authorization, attended the ceremony in central Paris alongside his wife, Antonela.
Messi competed for the individual award with his teammate Kylian Mbappé, runner-up with France in the Qatar Cup.
The Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, world champion in the 100 meters dash for the fifth time last year in Eugene (United States), was awarded as the best female athlete of the year.
The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, champion of the US Open in 2022 and number 1 in the world’s youngest in history, was chosen as the revelation of the year and the Danish player Christian Eriksen was awarded the Return of the Year, for having resumed his high-level football career English after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2021 match.
Brazil had two names competing for this year’s award, Filipe Toledo, world surfing champion, and Rayssa Leal, gold medalist at the X-Games and champion of the World Street Skateboard League.
Both competed in the “Action Sport” category. The prize, however, was given to Chinese skier Eileen Gu.
