Menstrual Dignity and Marquesiano Festival are now laws in Amazonas

PL that originated the ‘Menstrual Dignity Day’, celebrated annually on May 28

Manaus (AM) – Governor Wilson Lima sanctioned Bills (PL) on the initiative of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), which will bring important advances to Amazonian society. Among them is PL nº 281/2022, which gave rise to Law nº 6.238 of 2023, which establishes May 28 as the ‘Day of Menstrual Dignity’. Another sanctioned law comes from PL nº 378/2022, which declares the ‘Marquesiano Folk Festival’ as Cultural Heritage of Intangible Nature of the State of Amazonas.

With the sanction of Bill nº 281/2022, authored by the deputy Alessandra Campelo (PSC), subscribed by the president of Aleam, Roberto Cidade (União Brasil), the State of Amazonas officially recognizes the ‘Day of Menstrual Dignity’ , to be celebrated annually on May 28.

The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness of the importance of menstrual health and to combat stigma and discrimination associated with menstruation. From now on, the date will be included in the State’s Official Calendar of Events, consolidating its recognition and relevance to society.

“Menstrual Dignity Day is a significant achievement for Amazonian women, who face challenges and obstacles related to menstruation. From this commemorative date, it is expected that there will be a greater awareness of society about the needs and rights of women during the menstrual period, including access to appropriate hygiene products, educational information and safe spaces to discuss the subject without taboos”,

explains the deputy.

The other project sanctioned by the governor, which declares the ‘Marquesiano Folk Festival’ as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Amazonas, is authored by deputy Roberto Cidade. This festival, held annually by the São Raimundo neighborhood community, students and former students of the Marquês de Santa Cruz State School, now receives official recognition of its importance to the state’s culture.

With this declaration, the ‘Marquesiano Folk Festival’ joins other cultural elements already recognized as intangible heritage, thus preserving the identity and cultural diversity of Amazonas. The Executive Branch of the State will be responsible for making the necessary records in the books of the competent bodies, in accordance with current legislation.

The ‘Marquesiano Folk Festival’ is a traditional event that celebrates popular culture, with presentations of folk dances, typical music and regional artistic manifestations. Its declaration as intangible heritage highlights the importance of preserving and valuing this unique cultural expression, which transmits stories, traditions and memories of the people of Amazonas.
