The countries chosen for the event are the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. The draw was carried out by the International Federation of the modality (FIBA), in Manilla (Philippines). The Brazilians fell into Group G, based in Jakarta (Indonesia), alongside Iran, Ivory Coast and current champion Spain.
The two best teams in the group advance from the stage, taking the added points and facing – again in Jakarta – the two qualified from Group H (Canada, Latvia, Lebanon and France). The two most positive campaigns among the four proceed to the quarterfinals.
In addition to being champions, Spain leads the FIBA world ranking. Brazil appears in 13th position, being the third best team in the Americas – behind the United States and Argentina – and the second best positioned among those in Group G. Iran occupies the 22nd position (second best in Asia), while Ivory Coast is ranked 42nd (and fifth in Africa). In comparison with the teams in Group H, the Brazilians are surpassed by France (fifth in the world), but are ahead of Canada (15th), Latvia (29th) and Lebanon (43rd).

Argentina, current runner-up and who beat the Brazilians in the final of the Copa América, played in Recife last year, fell by the wayside in the qualifiers, beaten by the Dominicans.
Brazil is two-time world champion in men’s basketball. The titles were won in 1959 (Chile) and 1963 (when it was the host country), with idols like Wlamir Marques and Amaury Passos as protagonists. The Brazilian team is the only one to never be out of the competition, held for the first time in 1950, but it has not been on the podium since 1978 (Philippines), when it ended up in third place.

FIBA also released the venues for the next editions of the women’s and men’s World Cups. The Women’s World Cup, in 2026, will be in Berlin (Germany), with 16 selections. The men’s, a year later, was confirmed for Doha (Qatar), again with 32 teams
