The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, announced this Tuesday (29) that the government intends to create a “permanence scholarship” for high school students, with the aim of preventing school dropouts.
According to Santana, President Lula should send a bill on the subject to the National Congress in September. “We need to ensure that young people stay in high school because we lose a lot of students, especially at the turn of the 9th grade to the 1st year of high school,” he said in an interview with TV green seasaffiliate of Globe In Ceara.
The proposal will be made based on a survey by the MEC, which found that there is a high rate of dropouts in the period mentioned by the minister. The age, in general, of young people at this stage is 14 to 15 years old.
The details of the project, such as the value of the grant or the distribution format, are still being studied and also depend on the amount available to be transferred, as explained by Santana.
“It really depends on the budget. It is important to remember that when we took over the MEC there was a significant budget cut. So, the first measures we took were to recompose the budget”, said the minister.
