MBL will have previews between Kim Kataguiri and Guto Zacarias in SP – 06/21/2023 – Politics

The MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre) will make previews to choose its pre-candidate for the Prefecture of São Paulo between the federal deputy Kim Kataguiri and the state deputy Guto Zacarias. Both are affiliated with União Brasil, an acronym that supports the re-election of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), which could be an obstacle to the plans.

As revealed to Sheet in May, the MBL considered launching Kim, but the second-term parliamentarian indicated at the time that he was undecided on the subject and defended that other high-profile members of the group, such as Guto, who debuted this year in the Legislative Assembly, also be evaluated.

According to the organization, 12,000 people are able to participate in the primaries, an internal vote to decide who will be a candidate, along the lines of those made by traditional parties, such as PSDB and PT. The MBL is also working to become a legend, but today it has members housed in various acronyms.

In a statement to be distributed this Wednesday (21), the movement says that it sought to adopt a form of democratic choice and that it intends to promote a series of debates between the two candidates.

Kim, 27, who is in opposition to President Lula (PT) and has been active in the Chamber with the education agenda, and Guto, 24, who is deputy leader of the Tarcísio de Freitas government (Republicans) in the Assembly, showed interest in running for mayor and were willing to face peer scrutiny.

The MBL itself points out that the two have different projects for the capital of São Paulo, with “different conceptions of the city”, but both in tune with the values ​​of the movement, which was created in 2014 and played a relevant role in calling for marches for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff (PT).

According to the group, Guto assesses urban issues as central to São Paulo’s problems and part of his visions coincide with those presented in 2020 by Arthur do Val, who was the movement’s candidate and surprised by finishing in fifth place, with 9 .78% of valid votes.

Kim, in turn, establishes as priorities the investment in education policies, considered by him as fundamental to promote social transformations. The MBL says that the deputy will present a new and original project in this field, which may also be debated during the caucuses.

For the movement, the experience in the previous municipal election showed room for a candidate with a liberal, young and combative profile.

Mamãe Falei, as Do Val is known, is barred from running again because he was ineligible for eight years after his state deputy mandate was revoked in 2022. but remains a member and must act in the campaigns of MBL participants.

The entity says that all students of Academia MBL (platform of paid courses), coordinators, militants and supporters registered in Clube MBL (which gives access to exclusive content and events) will be entitled to vote in the previews. The date of the internal vote is yet to be announced.

The group believes that the party imbroglio will have to be discussed at a later stage, since today the tendency is for União Brasil to join Nunes’ coalition. Leader of the acronym in the municipality, the mayor, Milton Leite, is one of the main allies of the current mayor.

When questioned about the discussion of other candidacies within the party, Leite says that every member has the right to claim a seat, but that the position will be decided at a convention, with the participation of other party instances.

Kim and Guto cannot change parties at any time, under the risk of losing their respective mandates. The options are to try a negotiated exit from the acronym, seek expulsion, appeal to the Electoral Justice alleging persecution or wait until 2024 for the party window, which releases migration.

In addition to Nunes, the municipal race has included the names of federal deputies Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) —supported by Lula— and Tabata Amaral (PSB) and presenter José Luiz Datena (PDT).

Also federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL), who was planning to run with the support of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), gave up trying to enlist the party’s endorsement of his candidacy after the former president approached Nunes and indicated his willingness to be with him in the re-election campaign.

The creation of a party by the MBL should gain traction from the second half, with the collection of signatures to formalize the registration in the TSE (Superior Electoral Court). 492,000 supporters are needed, in at least nine states. The prediction is that the caption will only be able to compete in the 2026 election.

The movement seeks to establish itself on the right as an option for Bolsonarism. Last month, the MBL withdrew from organizing an act against Lula and the Fake News PL after Bolsonarists preached a boycott of the demonstration, throwing to the ground the idea of ​​uniting the opposition to the president in the streets.
